Guidance to your child's learning and development in the Early Years Foundation Stage

Autumn Term Curriculum 2024

Before and After School Provision for Nursery and Reception

The extended day for our nursery runs from 8.00am-6.00pm with Reception aged children from the three Reception classes also having access to this provision in the nursery classroom if there are available spaces.

The staff team members and ratio for these hours are the same as for the core hours to ensure that provision is seamless and children feel nurtured and well supported by adults they know.

Breakfast and after school snacks are provided by the school kitchen and brought into the nursery classroom on trolleys. Breakfast consists of healthy cereals, fruit and toast; after school snacks could be sandwiches, pizza, pasta, salads, fruit or other options depending on the menu for the week. Children drink milk or water.

Please contact the Office for further information, or to book a place.

Reception children:

There will be a limited number of places available in Foundation Stage Breakfast Club and Afterschool Club for Reception children. You will receive information about booking places towards the end of the summer term.

Morning provision begins at 8am and runs until the Reception children go to class as 8.55am

You can book after school care from 3.30 pm until 6 pm. (Although you can pick your child up before 6pm the session can only be booked as a block session of 2.5 hours).

Our Facilities

The nursery operates in a fully equipped self-contained nursery classroom with designated areas for play, sleep, stories, arts and crafts, role play, games and puzzles. There are also en-suite toilet facilities. Children can only start at Coldfall nursery once they have been fully toilet trained. Parents will need to ensure that children can use the toilet and wipe themselves independently.

The large outdoor play area allows children plenty of opportunity to spend time outside, develop their physical skills and enjoy lots of fresh air. There is a climbing frame, sand pit, water play, art area, growing area and lots of space to run around or ride bikes or scooters.

How the Day is Structured

Our staff has a great commitment to meeting every child’s needs and ensuring they have a happy and creative time with us. On our nursery staff we have a fully qualified lead teacher and nursery nurse as well as a number of teaching assistants with Early Years expertise. Each child’s Key Person will be their class teacher, who will work alongside the TA or NNEB to form positive relationships. There is a ratio of at least 1 adult to 13 children, but this may be higher depending on overall numbers of children on our books at any one time.

When the children arrive they are welcomed, registered and begin their session with a whole class story, song or game.

During the day there are several whole group carpet sessions for story, singing, new learning and reflection time; opportunities for small group work or 1:1 activities with an adult and free choice activities from a range of learning areas (eg role play, sand and water play, construction, arts and crafts, English and Maths games).

There are set meal and snack times during the day. There is also plenty of opportunity for outdoor play and learning during every session. If children are tired after lunch, there is a quiet, cosy corner for a nap.

Towards the end of the day, there are quieten- down activities, such as a story and time to talk about the day before parents collect their children by 6pm.

Meal times

At meal times the tables will be laid for the children to eat in the nursery classroom. Food is cooked in the school kitchen and delivered on hot trolleys. All our meals follow the Department for Education’s nutritional guidelines. There is a healthy well balanced menu offering a daily meat or vegetarian option and catering for reasonable dietary requirements. Meal times are seen as an important part of the day when we enjoy our food together and develop habits of healthy eating and good table manners. At lunch time children may have a school meal or bring in their own packed lunch.
